How FaceTite Works: The Science of Radiofrequency-Assisted Lipolysis

FaceTite is a minimally invasive procedure developed by InMode that uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy delivered simultaneously through a small internal electrode (inserted beneath the skin via a tiny incision) and an external electrode gliding along the skin surface. The device monitors tissue temperature in real time, delivering controlled heat to the subdermal fat layer and the underside of the dermis while protecting the overlying skin from burns.
The mechanism works on two physiological levels. First, the RF energy emulsifies (liquefies) localised fat deposits, which are then gently aspirated or absorbed by the body. Second — and arguably more clinically significant for the face — the thermal energy triggers collagen denaturation and neocollagenesis: existing collagen fibres contract immediately, producing a visible tightening effect, while the body’s healing response gradually lays down new collagen over the following months.
Why Radiofrequency Energy Rather Than Laser or Ultrasound?
RF energy produces a relatively uniform heating pattern within soft tissue, and because the FaceTite handpiece monitors both internal and external temperature simultaneously, the risk of over-treating any single zone is substantially reduced compared with older, non-monitored energy-assisted lipolysis devices. Unlike high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), which acts at a fixed depth from the exterior, RF-assisted lipolysis treats from within the tissue outward, allowing the physician to address both subcutaneous fat volume and dermal laxity in a single session.
The operating temperature target for FaceTite is typically 38–42°C on the external skin surface and approximately 70°C internally — a range that clinical literature associates with effective collagen remodelling without causing full-thickness tissue injury.
What Body Areas Can FaceTite Address?
On the face, FaceTite is most frequently applied to the jowls, jawline, submentum (under the chin), and upper neck. The nasolabial folds (the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth) and marionette lines can also be addressed when the overlying skin has adequate laxity to respond to the tightening stimulus. For body applications, a closely related technology — BodyTite — uses the same RF platform at higher energy outputs.
What Results Can Patients Realistically Expect?

FaceTite produces results that sit on a spectrum influenced by the patient’s skin quality, the degree of fat present, and the extent of any pre-existing skin laxity. Immediate post-procedure swelling can make it difficult to appreciate results for the first two to four weeks. The most notable improvement in contour typically becomes apparent between two and three months, as the majority of oedema has resolved, while continued collagen remodelling means results can still be improving at the six-month mark.
Studies suggest meaningful and measurable outcomes. A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology reported an average contraction of the subdermal tissue of approximately 37% in patients treated with RFAL, with skin surface measurements confirming visible tightening at six months post-procedure. Clinical reports also indicate patient satisfaction rates above 85% in independent follow-up surveys when patients were appropriately selected and counselled on realistic expectations beforehand.
It is important to note that FaceTite does not replicate the degree of tissue repositioning achievable with a surgical facelift. Patients with very significant skin excess — sometimes described as “redundant” skin — may ultimately require surgical excision of that excess rather than, or in addition to, an energy-based treatment.
